About Quill

Quill is built for long-form work — books, documentation, research, long essays — where structure matters more than word count. The outline is a first-class, manipulable object, so restructuring 40,000 words is a drag rather than an afternoon of cutting and pasting.

Features

  • Outline as an object

Drag to restructure; cross-references follow automatically.

  • Section status

Outline, draft, revised, done — see the state of a manuscript at a glance.

  • Fold to any depth

Read 60,000 words as a one-page outline and descend selectively.

  • Durable cross-references

References point at sections, so rewriting a heading does not break them.

  • Plain files on disk

Your manuscript is a folder of Markdown. Quill is a lens, not a silo.

  • Real export

Markdown, LaTeX, DOCX and EPUB, all of which actually compile.

The story

1 min read

Long-form writing is a structure problem

Below about 3,000 words, structure takes care of itself. Above 20,000, structure is the entire job, and every general-purpose editor treats it as a side effect of your heading levels.

Quill makes the outline the primary object and the prose secondary.

What that means in practice

  • Restructure by dragging. Move a section and everything under it moves, with cross-references updating automatically.
  • Write out of order. Sections carry status — outline, draft, revised, done — so a half-finished manuscript is legible at a glance instead of being a wall of undifferentiated text.
  • Fold to any depth. Read your 60,000-word manuscript as a one-page outline, then descend only where you need to.
  • Cross-references that survive. A reference points at a section, not a page number or a heading string, so it does not break when you rewrite the heading.

Deliberately not a Notion competitor

Quill has no databases, no wikis, no team workspaces, no comments. It is a single-player tool for one long document at a time.

Every one of those omissions is load-bearing. Adding team features means adding presence, permissions and notification design, and the result would be a worse writing environment.

Export

Markdown, LaTeX, DOCX and EPUB. Your manuscript is a folder of plain files on your disk; Quill is a way of looking at them, not a place they live.

Frequently asked questions

Is Quill a Notion alternative?

No, and it would be a bad one. Quill has no databases, wikis or team spaces. It is a single-player tool for one long document. If you need a workspace, you need a different product.

Where are my files stored?

On your disk, as a folder of Markdown files with a small sidecar for structure. Sync with whatever you already use — Quill has no cloud of its own.

Is it a subscription?

No. $59 once, with two years of updates included. After that you keep the version you have and can renew for updates if you want them.

Does it do AI writing?

There is an optional structural assistant that suggests reorganisation. It does not generate prose, because a tool that writes for you is solving a different problem than a tool that helps you write.
