What made this list

Three filters, applied hard:

  1. The open build is the real build. No open-core split where the features you need live behind a commercial licence.
  2. Somebody operates it in production. Including at least one team that is not the maintainer.
  3. You can leave. Data in open formats, documented export, no proprietary lock at the storage layer.

That third filter eliminates most of the category. A self-hosted tool you cannot migrate off is not meaningfully more free than a hosted one.

The trade-off nobody mentions

Self-hosting moves cost from a subscription line to an operations line. For a team with an engineer who enjoys this, that is a good trade. For a team without one, a $29/month subscription is almost always cheaper than the Saturday you will eventually spend on an upgrade that went sideways.
